Air intake systems

Air intake systems or cold air intakes have become a staple for more power and efficiency for more than 20 years. They use a relatively simple concept: larger quantities of cooler, denser air delivered to the engine. What you gain is increased horsepower and torque without working the engine any harder. Many people also like hearing the engine better – air intakes will let you hear the throatiness of the engine without it becoming overbearing. For many people, this is a good first step on the upgrade path.

Throttle body spacers

Throttle body spacers marry well with intake systems. Again, they work on a relatively simple principle. The spacer gets installed between the throttle body and the intake manifold, and has a unique helical cut machined in. As the air passes through the spacer, it creates a high-speed swirling effect. When the air reaches the combustion chamber, the swirling air atomizes better with the fuel, resulting in better combustion. And that means more power. And power is good. You now get more low-end power, which results in better fuel economy.

Power programmers

Power programmers (or chips, as they were known in the past) are designed to alter the fuel curve, ignition timing and transmission mapping to increase power and efficiency. On turbocharged engines, the boost can also be altered, resulting in significant gains. Here are some of the popular adjustments you can make with programmers:

• Alter the engine redline.
• Change the automatic transmission shift points.
• Set the engine to maximize fuel efficiency and power on 87 octane or 91 octane fuel.
• Correct the speedometer for different tire sizes or gear ratio changes.
• Read and reset engine trouble codes.

Exhaust systems have been a popular performance upgrade since cars had wheels. Do you love the sound of an engine as it is racing toward redline? So do we!
