The owner of this beautiful Nissan GT-R contacted Audio Designs and Custom Graphics in Jacksonville to have us perform a carbon fiber wrap on the rear spoiler. We had a look at the vehicle and showed the client a sample of the 3M 1080 vinyl we use. He was happy with our plan and gave us the go-ahead to schedule an appointment to do the work.
Wing Removal for Complete Coverage
When the client arrived at the shop, we pulled the car into our installation bay. Nissan uses a combination of two-sided adhesive tape, plastic clips and threaded fasteners to hold the wing to the deck lid. It requires three staff members to remove the wing from the vehicle – two members hold the spoiler while another loosens the fasteners.
We had already prepared a workbench with a soft blanket to protect the wing from damage. The paint underneath has to be protected in case the client wants to go back to stock. Of course, attention to detail and care of your vehicle is part of our daily routine.
Disassembly and Surface Preparation
Once the wing was on the workbench, we removed the third brake light and secured the wiring with masking tape. We removed the access panels at the ends of the spoiler and undid the three bolts to separate the upper section. We also removed the center support post so it could be wrapped separately.
Surface preparation is a critical part of our process to ensure the final product is free of imperfections. We washed all four parts of the wing to remove and dust, then gave them a quick wipe-down with a clay bar to ensure the surface was perfectly smooth and flawless.
3M 1080 Carbon Fiber Wrap Installation
We used a large piece of vinyl to wrap the upper section. Starting in the center of the top component, we worked outward from the center, ensuring perfect adhesion to the concave surfaces as we progressed outward and around the leading and trailing edges. The lower sections received a similar treatment, and we ensured the grain pattern of the vinyl is aligned with the upper section. The center post was the last step.
Once done, we reassembled the wing components, applied new adhesive to the center post and reinstalled the wing on the vehicle.
The client was thrilled with how the carbon fiber wrap looked. We all joked that the car was now 8 pounds lighter!
