We recently had a Jacksonville client come to us with a 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special looking to improve the audio on his motorcycle. We spent a lot of time going over the bike, learning about the client’s listening tastes and getting a feel for what they wanted. After we mapped out a plan for the equipment, we went inside and had the client listen to some amps and speakers. After some time auditioning we came to an agreement and scheduled a date to do the work.
Motorcycle Audio Upgrade Utilizes Factory Radio
This client wanted to use the factory radio so the first thing that we did was hook up the RTA to the outputs. We found that this radio had a 12dB hump at around 100hz. This is used to make the factory speakers sound good at lower volume. When you add aftermarket amplifiers it is too much and a lot of distortion is caused along with mechanical limitations. We overcame this obstacle and moved on to the amplifier.
Hertz HCP5D Supplies Power To All Speakers
The client chose to install a Hertz HCP5D amplifier for its small size and high output and quality. We looked at the different mounting options and decided that the best place would be the left bag. We were able to route the wires into the bag and do it in a way that would not take away from the appearance of this beautiful motorcycle.
Hertz Speakers and Subs Round Out System
For front speakers, we installed the Hertz ECX 165.5 Coaxials. Hertz ECX 690.3 speakers were mounted in the right bag behind custom perforated grills along with a vinyl wrapped plate to isolate the front and rear waves. For bass, we installed a Hertz ES F20.5 flat 8″ woofers in the left bag. We ran all of the wiring through Molex plugs so that the bags are removable to be taken apart and cleaned.
Tuning Is Critical Even In Motorcycle Audio Upgrades!
As with all of our amplifier installations, we tuned the system using out high quality test equipment. For this job we use an oscilloscope to carefully dial in the system. The scope allows us to minimize distortion while maximizing output to give this motorcycle a crystal clean sound.

I need help setting up my system, I have installed an Arc Audio 600.4 amp, 4 Hertz ECX 6.5’s and 2 Hertz EDX 5.7 speakers. My system played well for 4 days and then started cutting off on me at mid range. Are there any suggestions you can offer? I have had it flashed at HD and it seems to need flashing again.
Please any help will be greatly appreciated.
