A client from here in Jacksonville recently visited Audio Designs and Custom Graphics to inquire about upgrading the radar detector and laser defense system in his 2016 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S. He’d had a system installed recently by another shop but wasn’t impressed with its performance. After researching, he decided that he wanted an Escort Max CI 360 system and found us listed as an authorized retailer on the escortradar.com website.
Aston Martin Radar Detector Offers Long-Range Detection
Once we had the Vantage in our shop, we removed the front and rear bumper covers to mount the twin-horn radar receivers. Escort uses an antenna design that is physically optimized for the frequencies that X, K and Ka-band radar guns use. Combined with advanced digital signal processing to improve detection sensitivity, this antenna offers amazing performance that helps ensure that the driver has time to check the vehicle speed before an officer can get a reading.
Because radar signals can pass through plastic, we were able to conceal the rear antenna behind the bumper cover on the vehicle’s passenger side. The front antenna is mounted behind the large mesh center grille.
Laser Defense Prevents Speeding Tickets
As more and more police forces are switching to laser guns instead of radar, having a laser defense system is quickly becoming the only way to keep yourself from getting a ticket, aside from driving at or below the speed limit. We all know that 560+ horsepower is enough to break any speed limit in the state in a just a few seconds. Having a second or two to check your speed when the system detects that an officer is using a lidar gun is the difference between making it to work on time or getting a big speeding ticket.
The Escort Max CI 360 system includes four ShifterMax laser transceivers. We mounted the two front sensors in the lower front grille, just inboard of the forward parking sensors. While the installation looks simple, our team took the time to make sure each sensor is aimed directly forward and parallel to the ground to provide the longest range possible.
We mounted another set of ShifterMax sensors on the back of the Vantage just above the rear license plate. Again, proper alignment was checked to ensure functionality.
Easy-to-See, Easy-to-Use Technology
The last step in terms of component mounting was to find locations for the display and the control panel. The client wanted something simple and effective. With that in mind, we mounted the display at the bottom of the instrument cluster, just above the steering column. The color display lets the driver know what type of threat has been detected and whether it was from the front or rear of the vehicle.
The controller for the Max Ci 360 is mounted to the right of the steering column. This location is easily accessible by the driver, which is crucial to the reliable operation of the system. When the MAX Ci 360 detects a signal from a lidar gun, it transmits a series of light pulses that confuse the gun and prevent it from getting a reading. What’s crucial to avoiding a ticket is knowing when to cancel the signal transmission. As soon as the driver has confirmed the vehicle is traveling a legal speed, they must cancel the signal transmission so the officer can get a reading. This process is called Jam-to-Kill and is the only way to avoid raising suspicion. The control panel also lets the client adjust the system volume, make configuration changes and mark the location of known false alarms.
