One of our long-time clients recently contacted us about adding radar and laser detection to his 2017 BMW M3. This client has owned several BMWs in the past and was flying to Europe to pick up this newer-than-new M3. He wanted to best radar and laser detector we could find. We set to work on researching the latest advancements in radar detectors to find the ideal solution.
The Full Monty For This BMW M3 Radar System
After talking with many of our peers in the industry, we homed in on the (ALP) AntiLaser Priority system from Radikal. We chose the ALP Quint as the base system. The Quint includes five laser sensors, the main control box, a control panel, and installation brackets and accessories. We added the Net Radar add-on package with optional rear radar antenna, the AL Bluetooth module, the GPS antenna and the HIFI Control set Speaker. This is the kitchen sink regarding options.
AL Priority Offers State-of-the-Art Laser Protection
The battle between laser speed detector manufacturers and products like the ALP is never-ending. New laser modulation frequencies and patterns are introduced all the time. The ALP is easily upgraded with these new patterns via a conveniently accessible USB port.
For maximum protection, we mounted three of the laser sensors on the front of the vehicle. We mounted one sensor in the center of the lower grille and one on the top inside edges of the outer air intakes. We machined multi-angled brackets for each sensor from expanded PVC plastic to ensure that each one would be mounted absolutely level to the ground. The laser sensors must be aimed perfectly to provide maximum detection of laser signal, and to transmit a responding signal pattern.
On the rear of the vehicle, we mounted one sensor on either side of the license plate on the trunk lip. We double-checked the alignment of each sensor with a bubble level to ensure perfect accuracy.
Accessories for Additional Protection
We mounted a radar sensor on the front and the rear of the car. The Net Radar sensors can detect radar signals through the plastic bumper covers, so we were able to conceal these. The GPS antenna lets the owner set the speed at which the system starts providing warnings. For example, if the speed limit where the owner normally drives is 30 miles per hour, he can set the ALP to start monitoring for laser and radar at any speed above 35 miles per hour. Speed-based activation results in a significant reduction in false warnings from non-police radar locations.
The Bluetooth module allows the client to interface his smartphone with the ALP. He can monitor warnings and vehicle speed, and adjust settings, all through an app. ALP offers ALPConnect apps for both Android and iOS platforms. Finally, the HIFI control set includes a control panel and speaker for the system and a custom voice prompts for warnings and system configuration. The HIFI control makes using the system more intuitive.
Best Installation Practices
As with all the work we do here at Audio Design & Custom Graphics, we took our time with this installation. Each mounting bracket had to be perfect. We wrapped all the wire routing in TESA under-hood cloth tape to make it look like the factory wiring. We mounted the USB upgrade jack behind an easily accessible panel on the left side of the dash. The client can download updates and program the system quickly and easily without us having to take the dash apart for him.
When the client returned to pick up the car, he was quite impressed with the installation. He was anxious to get on the road to see how this system performed compared to others he has owned. After a few days with the fully loaded AntiLaser Priority, he reported that he was picking up radar warnings about a mile ahead and that he had no fear of being caught by a LIDAR speed gun.
The investment in the ALP system was not insignificant, but the performance justifies the price.
