A client from Jacksonville contacted Audio Designs & Custom Graphics about doing an audio upgrade in his 2016 Ford Mustang GT. In typical fashion, we got together with the customer and his vehicle, looking it over and exploring ideas. At the end of the consultation, we worked up a proposal that he liked, including our new Ford Mustang enclosures, so we set a time to begin work on his car.
iPad Mini Installed in Dash
Right from the beginning, we knew our work was cut out for us. The client wanted an iPad Mini installed in the dash, but didn’t want to lose the functionality of his stock stereo system. Our custom fabricators got to work, using our CNC machine to design and build a custom kit for the 2015 and newer Mustangs. When the kit is installed, the tablet fits perfectly, looking like it came as a factory option from Ford. We supply a custom knob for the volume and tuning to keep all the functionality intact. If you like this kit, you can buy it directly from us by clicking HERE. The sound from the iPad plays through the stock stereo system over Bluetooth, so there are no wires to connect. How cool is that?
Custom Stack-Fab Enclosures Fit Perfectly
Any good car audio upgrade needs bass, but if you have look at the trunk of a new Mustang, there isn’t a lot of space to give up. To give the client maximum bass in minimum space, we used the cavities on each side of the trunk. Our team designed custom stack-fab enclosures that we cut out on our in-house CNC machine.
What is a stack-fab enclosure? Good question. As you can see in the pictures, it is multiple pieces of MDF wood that we cut in slightly different dimensions and stack on top of each other to create three-dimensional boxes out of a flat piece of wood. Pretty incredible, huh? To make the enclosures even more structurally sound, we apply fiberglass resin to the inside of the box. We coat the back of the enclosure with spray on bedliner material, which protects it from moisture.
The finished enclosures tuck nicely into the corners of the trunk, keeping almost all the cargo space intact.
Order Your Ford Mustang Enclosures
If you would like to buy either of these enclosures, you can click HERE. The enclosures are available in driver’s side or passenger side fitments for either 10” or 12” woofers. If you want a turnkey solution, you can even buy them loaded with Audiomobile subwoofers, ready to install in your Mustang.
New Speakers for Better Sound
This Mustang GT had the base audio system in it, so the speakers were pretty anemic-sounding. The team at Audio Designs & Custom Graphics solved that problem by installing new front and rear speakers in the stock locations. We chose Hertz ESK165.5 components in the front and ECX165.5 coaxial speakers in the rear. The car sounded much better, with the new speakers bringing out a lot more detail in the music.
An Amplifier Brings it All to Life
Once we had installed all the speakers, the vehicle needed power to bring it all to life. The design team chose an Arc Audio XDi850.5 five-channel amplifier. It gave us over 700 watts of clean power – more than enough to create a concert on wheels. We mounted the amplifier in the spare tire well in the trunk, making it easy to access while being completely hidden from view.
Processor Brings it All Together
When the system was first designed, the client declined the option of adding a digital sound processor (DSP). Once the system was finished, we contacted him, explaining that he would see an incredible difference if we added one into the system. At that point, he agreed, so our technicians installed an Audison Bit 10D processor. This accomplished several things for us. First, the factory system killed all the bass under 50 hz, so the new subwoofers sounded anemic. The processor allowed us to restore that lost bass, making the low end sound incredible. The Bit10D also allowed us to equalize all of the new speakers individually to the acoustics of the Mustang, maximizing their improvement. The end result was a system that literally sounded 300% better.
Only Happy if the Client Likes it
As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Whenever we finish an install, no one is happy until the client is happy. Fortunately, this client loved it. As we walked him around the vehicle, showing all the installation details, he was all smiles. When we cranked it up for the first time, he knew he’d made the right decision in choosing us for his new stereo system. To see a walk-through of the system take a minute to watch this video:

I live in Michigan and have a 2016 Mustang GT. Your system upgrade with stock stereo head is great option. Could my local car stereo installer purchase your equipment and do the install based on your instructions?
Brandon Terrell says
If you order the speaker box without the speaker… can you use any 10 or 12″ speaker to fit the box system???

Glad to be of help. I’ve modified the theme for use within another theme (Atahualpa) because I couldn’t get it to work properly once I upgraded WP one too many times. Welcome to the blog.

Just received my box today and it is perfect!! Do you guys have any suggestions for anchoring it to the sidewalks though? It seems to fit pretty snug in the cubby of the trunk and I put some Velcro on the bottom to keep it from sliding, but it looks like it could tip.
Super satisfied!!
Sam Evans says
Sidewall of the trunk, not sidewalk. Sorry, dumb autocorrect
Brandon McDonald says
Do you’ll have anything for a 13 mustang gt

I just ordered 2 L7 10”s and 3 amps (mono, 2 channel and 4 channel) along with a back up battery and 3 capicitors. Can you creat a custom install out of plexiglass in the trunk? I’d like the amps to be seen through the glass and the subs to pertrude through the glass.
Joe says
Does anyone know the cubic feet numbers with the 10” subwoofers
Dennis says
Any chance you sell the boxes? I’d be interested in purchasing.
Thanks
