Here at Audio Designs & Custom Graphics, we have noticed a lot of confusion when it comes to laser-based radar. Many clients feel that they are protected if they own a portable laser and radar detector. When it comes to radar, they are correct. But when it comes to laser protection, you are a sitting duck with a laser detector. Follow along as we explain the differences between laser detectors and defusers.
Normal Radar Is Easy To Detect
With a normal, electromagnetic pulse-based radar, when you are driving up the road and someone is running radar for speed control, your radar detector will detect its presence being used on someone driving in front of you. This gives you time to slow down and avoid a ticket. The only exception to this is when you are alone on a solitary road. If no one is in front of you, the radar operator may not have fired the gun. That means you will roll into the operator’s line of sight, he’ll fire radar at you and the probability is that you will get a ticket. Pretty simple, huh?
LIDAR Detection Is Useless
When we talk laser radar (LIDAR, to be specific), that has many advantages for the person operating the gun. The operator can truly pick someone out of a crowd, as the detector only has a beam about 3 feet wide at 300 yards. That means the odds of aiming at you and getting someone else are very slim, so its results rarely lose in court.
Here is the second difference. As it is a beam of light, a laser detector will not pick up the laser that is shot at a vehicle in front of you. It only detects the laser when it is being fired at you. So, the laser operator aims the gun at your vehicle. He shoots your vehicle, your laser detector goes off, and then you get pulled over and handed a ticket. That doesn’t sound very promising, does it?
Defusers Can Prevent Laser Tickets
Well, here is the good news. Laser defusers (as K40 calls them) and laser shifters (as Escort calls them) take laser protection to the next level. When your vehicle is shot by a laser gun, these laser sensors will instantly pick it up and fire beams of light back at the laser gun, preventing the operator from getting a reading on your vehicle. You reduce your speed and drive right on by, avoiding a ticket.
Remember that scenario where you’re driving alone on an otherwise-empty road, get shot by normal radar and the odds were that you would get a ticket? Laser defusers and laser shifters solve that problem as well.
Defuser Benefits Are Only Available In Custom Systems
Now that you realize you need laser shifters or laser defusers, the only way to get them is with a custom-installed laser and radar detector. We invite you to stop by Audio Designs & Custom Graphics with your vehicle. One of our team members will look over your vehicle with you and take time to understand your driving habits. At that point, we will work up what we feel is your best solution. And rest assured, our award-winning installation team will perform work on your car that meets – and often exceeds – that of a vehicle manufacturer.
